Mendenhall
Glacier ice The chunk of Ice you see above
is part of a much larger piece that calved from the Mendenhall glacier
( seen in the distance ) floated
down the river and eventualy melted to the state you see it here.
The Mendenhall Glacier, located
just outside Juneau, Alaska is 12 miles long and 1.5 miles wide extending
from the Junea Ice Field to Mendenhall Lake. That is alot of ice. This
glacier is a popular attraction due to it being close to a population center
( Juneau ) and is easier to get to than most glaciers. The Mendenhall however,
is humbled in size by the larger glaciers such as the Malapenina Glacier
in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park which covers 1,500 square miles . That
is larger than the Entire state of Rhode Island.
