Bear Standing on Island
The sense that Bears rely on the most is their sense of smell. By standing on their hind legs and getting their nose higher in the air, the Bear is able to pick up more scents that may be wafting through the air. Standing also allows the Bear a better field of view, which is especially helpful in tall grass and brush. A commonly held misconception is that a Bear raised up on his hind legs is "angry" or showing signs of aggression. That may be the case in the movies, but in real life the Bear is usually just checking out what's going on.
