Adirondack Pine Marten-Martes americana Also known as the Sable, the Pine Marten spends most of it's life hunting for mice, squirrels, birds and other small animals. Considered mainly arboreal (living in the trees) the Pine Marten also hunts on the ground and will also go after frogs and fish in shallow water. Prefering to live in coniferous forests, the Pine Marten does well in the thick Spruce and Fir tree stands of the Adirondack Mountains. Once heavily trapped for it's beautiful coat, lower prices paid for fur in recent years has caused fewer people to trap them. This seems to have helped The Pine Marten's numbers. I Photographed this one from inside my tent with a 200mm lens while camping in the Adirondack Mountains. Check out the new nature Gallery!
